About Ana Reyes
I have to admit, I don’t really mind suspending belief now and again for the sake of entertainment—but I thought it worked. I do understand this book is not everyone’s cup of tea, and I found many problems with it. This was a fun debut thriller with an intriguing premise. I’m always a sucker for an unreliable narrator, and Ana Reyes does such a good job with Maya’s point of view. The book isn’t compelling or believable as a thriller, but the author has potential in other directions. Ana Reyes is the New York Times bestselling author of Reese’s Book Club pick The House in the Pines.

Her instability calls her interpretation of events into question, especially as she frequently doubts her own perception of reality. The week before 17-year-old Maya starts college, she witnessed the sudden and unexplained death of her best friend, Aubrey West. Though no one believed her, Maya thought her ex-boyfriend Frank was responsible.
The ultimate ‘Back to the Future’ filming locations map
It's actually a grassy quad behind the main building, on the east sideof the campus. In the movie, they just parked the cars on the grass and the wide sidewalks to give theillusion of a parking lot. In the film, Doc Brown loses his family mansion building the time machine, and it’s too bad. He lives in Pasadena’s Gamble House, one of the most celebrated works of architecture on the West Coast.
Decorating a Pyramidal House in the Pines - The New York Times
What began as a fun side project for creative expression transitioned into a monetized social channel for interior design and DIY hacks. The OverDrive Read format of this ebook has professional narration that plays while you read in your browser. And coupled that with Maya’s memory loss of her moments with Frank—it truly is perplexing. The House in the Pines by Ana Reyes is an intriguing and suspenseful story about a woman’s search for the truth. Writing a book is hard and I do respect the work authors put in. If I could do it all again, I think I’d be a book editor.
It tried to be a Girl on the Train book and that I think is what left people confused and disappointed. It reminded me of The Shards which, similarly was a story about a teenage boy coming to terms with his sexuality who decides that this new kid at school murdered his boyfriend. His suspicions seem like a result of his own psychological struggles. To me it read like a very sad story of a girl coming to terms with the fact that a creepy older guy took advantage of her. The book never really resolves it in any rational way. Maya recalls (not sure if in the past or present) that her mom (Brenda) met her dad and his family on a church trip to Guatemala.
Here’s where Marty meets up with Doc and, after a shootout over stolen plutonium, travels back in time to 1955 in the film’s now-iconic DeLorean. Upon arrival in the 1950s, he runs over one of the two pines on Mr. Peabody’s ranch, which somehow does not cause any horrible ripple effect. It just changes the mall’s name from Twin Pines to Lone Pine. HisDad's house (below) is located just to the north, at 1711Bushnell Ave. HisMom's house (above) is located at 1727Bushnell Ave., in South Pasadena.
She admits that she’s going through Klonopin withdrawal. In the past, Frank calls Maya as she’s packing for college. She says she doesn’t think they should see each other and he asks for Aubrey’s number. Maya says she’ll ask Aubrey if that’s okay, and Frank accuses her of being jealous. I feel like he is the only one who might understand all this.
Families can enjoy camp tours, wagon rides, toasting marshmallows, zipline rides and archery, win door prizes and meet the camp’s staff. A complimentary barbecue lunch with hot Dutch oven biscuits and shaved ice will be served. Scenes inside Doc’s house were shot at the Blacker House, another Arts and Crafts mansion designed by brothers Charles and Henry Greene (who also built the Gamble House).
His mom turns out to be far less naive than Marty had thought, and thebully Biff ends up locking Marty in the trunk of a car. Fortunately, his dad shows up andactually rescues his mom from Biff, insuring their future union. These scenes were also shot at Whittier High (12417E. Philadelphia Street, in Whittier),but not in the parking lot. They were filmed at a part of the school wehaven't seen before. To get back to 1985, Marty has to back up the DeLorean all the way to Griffith Park in order to get up to 88 mph by the time he hits Courthouse Square. The street lamp he parks in front of is across from the Greek Theatre parking lot.
I will say, unlike other thrillers, it doesn’t go on and on about that aspect but it’s still present throughout the novel so that did take away from the story a bit for me. While not a perfect story, there’s actually quite a bit of depth and I was so interested in where the story would go. I truly had no idea and just went along for the ride. Sometimes I think it’s more fun to be completely surprised by thrillers rather than guessing all the key reveals.
Naturally, we are back at UniversalStudios, on the Courthouse Square set. Having received a phone call from 'Doc Brown'(Christopher Lloyd), asking him to meet him at night at the "Twin Pines Mall", 'Marty' shows up there and is introduced to Doc's time-traveling DeLorean... And below is a 2009 shot of the same house, from Steve. You can see those actual gates on displayduring the Universal Studios tramtour. In the real world, Marty's home street isa long way from both Whittier & Burbank.
Everyone in 1950s Hill Valley evidently lives in a stunning two-story Craftsman. George and Lorraine’s childhood homes can be found in real life on the very same street in South Pasadena. Who could foresee this pet project becoming a 500K-follower Instagram account? She wasn't even interested in design, let alone earning a living as a home content creator.
When everyone blamed Maya’s accusations on a grief-induced psychosis, Maya was prescribed the addictive anti-anxiety drug Klonopin. This debut thriller by Ana Reyes is a compelling narrative about the subtlety of memory and manipulation. It packs secrets upon secrets and will keep the pages turning. I spent all Super Bowl Sunday reading this book and instead, I wished I actually watched the game.
Before Instagram launched Stories, before the creator economy boomed into a billion-dollar industry, before influencers became experts, there was the viral craze of blogging. It's 2014, and a newly graduated Shelby Vanhoy launched a home decor and lifestyle blog titled Pretty in the Pines as she pondered what post-grad life looks like. On evenings and weekends, she updated her content with local travel recs, personal style advice, and apartment decorating tips.
Maya was a high school senior when her best friend, Aubrey, mysteriously dropped dead in front of the older man named Frank whom they’d been spending time with all summer. After the tragedy, Maya drowns herself in alcohol and drugs to numb the pain. At first, the story felt disjointed, and I wasn’t really sure what Maya’s father’s book had to do with the story at all.

Deep in these woods, there is a house that’s easy to miss. Most people, in fact, would take one look and insist it’s not there. What they would see are a house’s remains, a crumbling foundation crawling with weeds.
That, or Maya imagined the entire thing and has major mental health issues. Did the book explain why Frank was able to kill Aubrey, who seemed a lot less susceptible? Dan can’t believe Frank was actually a psycho and that he didn’t believe Maya. Maya thinks the poem is about forgetting our heavenly soul.
Review: The House in the Pines by Ana Reyes
Children are not permitted to use cell phones to call home. They must go the old-fashioned route and write postcards and letters home. Every summer, parents all across the Valley look forward to receiving letters and postcards from their children.
Reviews
Maya grew up without her father and knew little about her Guatemalan family, except a few stories. One story came from Jairo’s unfinished manuscript about a young boy named Pixán who goes on a quest to Guatemala City, only to have amnesia and forget his true, beloved home in a magical village in the clouds. I do feel like there were two book in there (neither really a thriller).
Prime Video Developing The House in the Pines TV Adaptation
Vanhoy ditched her Upper West Side apartment for a spacious North Carolina home last fall. Since she's mostly renovated small apartments, this is many followers' first time seeing her overhaul large spaces, like backyards and open-floor living rooms. But just like her 2014 post-grad apartment where she first started home designing, it's a journey many—including this writer—couldn't be more excited to follow. I do see why Reese’s Book Club selected it and I think it’s a good one for book clubs. The mystery of what happened to Aubrey and also the other woman at the diner is very interesting.

Maya tells Steven she thinks Frank had something to do with both Christina and Aubrey’s death. Back in the present at her mom’s house, Maya thinks someone’s getting into bed with her and imagines hearing the phone ringing.

While Frank is present for both deaths, there’s no evidence of any foul play by him. And no drugs or anything like that showed up during the investigations. When I first heard about this story and saw the cover—I thought it might be a bit of a generic thriller.
Maya yearns for that time in her own life, not out of some need to escape reality—reality is fine—but simply because she was born that way. Born to yearn, as some people are, for more magical times. This is her fourth acid trip, so she knows about the sadness of coming down, the sense of God having vacated the garden.
It seems to me that publishers are skimping on the editing because the editors they have are so underpaid and overworked. I liked the first few chapters but then got wise and felt it lacked anything really gripping. I did finish but was bored through the last 2/3rds. And was there an editor bc I felt it had many errors that could have been corrected if so. Yes we are well aware you and your dad have high cheekbones. Yes, to be a thriller it needed SOMETHING at the end.
A long-standing fixture on the Universal Studios backlot, it used to be called Mockingbird Square, because To Kill a Mockingbird was filmed there. Both his young Mom's and his young Dad'shomes are real houses, and both are located on the same block, and onthe same (west ) side of the street. These scenes were shot in themall parking lot of on the south sideof the Puente Hills mall, with the camera looking north towards what was then a JC Penny store. 'Marty' and 'Doc' successfullytest out the time-traveling Delorean in the mall's parking lot, then are suddenly attacked by angry, machine-gun-toting Libyan terrorists, who shoot 'Doc'.
However, he again manages to hypnotize her, this time with the intent to kill her. Remembering Jairo’s story helps Maya break the trance, giving Brenda enough time to interrupt and save Maya’s life. All the while, Maya has been recording her encounter with Frank on her phone, catching his confession to murder. In flashbacks, readers learn about the events leading up to Aubrey’s death in the past, and what transpired between Maya and Frank that same summer. Maya travels back home to Pittsfield to search for answers and to prove that Frank is responsible for Aubrey and Cristina’s deaths. As Maya searches for clues, she continues to experience withdrawal and increases her alcohol intake.
Frank would also tell Maya about a cabin he was building in the woods behind his father’s home. Frank never showed anyone this cabin, saying he wanted Maya to be the first to see it. Frank often showed Maya his key to the cabin, playing with it while telling his stories. Maya also self-medicates with alcohol as she tries to move on and forget what happened to Aubrey. However, when she is 25 years old, a viral online video catches Maya’s attention and brings her trauma back to the surface. The death is eerily reminiscent of Aubrey’s death.
In the present, Maya tracks down Steven, the administrator of a Facebook page in memory of Christina, the YouTube murder victim. Because the clock atop the Courthouse stopped when itwas hit by lightning in 1955,they know exactly the moment when it will be struck. This performance takes place upon the stageat the same Hollywood United Methodist Church inHollywood,(which, in real life, is about 27 miles away from Whittier High School). It's for the "EnchantmentUnder the Sea" school dance, where Marty hopes to reunite his parents, by staging a mock fight and a'rescue' by his nerd dad of his young Mom (Lea Thompson). But look closely at the ground here, at this concrete scarred by sun and ice. And if you blow on it, that spark will bloom into a blaze, a warm light in this cold dark forest. I will say, I seem to have the unpopular opinion that the ending twist was a fun, unexpected one. I really enjoyed the deeper messages in this book, especially the poignant theme of women and believability, memory and manipulation, the unbreakable bonds of family and friendship, et cetera.
